Tempus fugit , time flies and time fleets away. In constant search for the present, the ephemeral nature of theatre stops time and carries us into a parallel world. The world of the imagination and fantasy inviting us to enjoy and to take advantage of the time we have.
The Clásicos en Alcalá 2018 proposal: an invitation to live deeply the present moment - ephemeral, unique, unrepeatable- and in all its dimensions and possibilities.
A contemporary festival of Classical Theatre full of vitality created in modern times. This artistic direction intends to revitalize the Classics’ legacy in the present, enlightening us with the future. Future is where theatre should be, to be ahead of its own times, interlacing those art works’ lines of action along history.
Art and theatre with their mysterious nature allow us to re-awake now those things that have been printed only in books, paintings, buildings and traditions. The aim of theatre is to bring back the emotions, the life’s of those women and men that nowadays are still inside us, and through stage they laugh, cry, feel and transmit their experiences, in order to inspire us in the generation of a new future life.
Clásicos en Alcalá 2018 involves itself again with an open proposal that pools the experimental with the established, requesting passionate artists of Classics from diverse positions and discourses. In a clear investment for transcending the archaeological and contemplative temptation of the legacy, putting a question to the spectators from an experimental conscience, participative, critic and challenging, in the intent to democratize the uses and relations that citizens should establish with art and culture.
What we want, what we propose you, is to meet with Lope, Calderón, Shakespeare, Gracián, Teresa de Jesús… but instead of verifying our own prejudices and consideration, to let us surprise. In the same way the did in their times, breaking the moulds and generating new models, nowadays artists will set out new present challenges, from distress and questioning, from what today is known by “being ready of going out of the comfort zone”
Unfortunately, art and theatre are little things in the huge globalized and inter-connected nowadays’ world. Maybe the way of thriving and growing is just to appeal to the ephemeral condition and the shock of theatre, in which a little community meets and participates on this theatrical experience.
With our worries and tasks in this domestic welfare of the bad called “first world”, fleeting of time and fleeting of life is forgotten. And then, the Art can (and must) implement its useless utility, as a part of the inherent humanity capacities… as the slave did with the triumphant Roman Generals coming into Rome, whispering them:
“Look behind you, remember that you are a man, not a God”
The art reports our magnanimity and fragility, and Clásicos en Alcalá Festival wants to invite you to improve triumphantly along contemporaneity, without stop looking back, read, value and revive our Classics. The universal beauty of those works reminds us that we are nothing but women and men. People do anything on their hands and heart in order to share unique moments of life with their fellows.
Nothing human is alien, as the poet said. From the financial crisis to male and patriarch violence.. From love to melancholy… from past to future.. Everything is matter that requires the playful experience and learning that is theatre, to feel and dream on new ways of living and harmony.
A huge number of dreams are inside of the Classics’ everlasting memory. Throughout three weeks and a half of Clásicos en Alcalá 2018, those dreams will come up to fleeting realities that will invite us to re-know, re-awake, to participate on its re-presentation. In order to make a long-lasting inspiration spur emerged from this ephemeral meeting that is theatre.
In such a way that…
If tempus fugit, carpe diem.
