Laila Ripoll, National Theatre Price in 2015, along with Mariano Llorente, transforms Jonathan Swift’s  (known worldwide for “Gulliver’s Travels”) satirical essay into a play.

Swift’s monologue, undeniable model of the essay genre, is a whipping to indifference. It tries to solve the problems of overpopulation and poverty of the working class peasants in Ireland through a “reasonable, economic and easy” solution: the poorest parents must sell their children so that the rich landowners can eat them.

Using an irreproachable logic process, he carries out the premise he wants to denounce: the objective of every policy is to exploit the people/nation. The contemporary authors to Swift did not understand the satirical intention of the text and his work was considered of “poor taste”.

Swift’s text, in the hands of Mariano Llorente and slowly cooked, becomes a pleasant and entertaining show, just like a cooking show featuring, for example, Julia Child. Although it is possible that such a gastronomic satire will end up causing stomach cramps in your consciences…
